The Colom Law Firm is located in the historic downtown district of Columbus, Mississippi. The firm traces its history back to 1977, when Wilbur O. Colom established practice in Columbus as a sole practitioner. In 1979, the practice operated as Steighner and Colom. It later operated as Colom, Mitchell and Colom and then as Colom & Colom.
Wilbur O. Colom served as a municipal court judge, a part-time position, from 1985-87. Two former partners have been elected to judgeships: Beverly Mitchell Franklin was elected as County Court Judge in 1987, and Dorothy Winston Colom was elected as a Chancery Court Judge in 1994.
The Colom Law Firm practices primarily in the areas of personal injury, medical malpractice and mass tort litigation, including but not limited to the areas of pharmaceutical, environmental, insurance and consumer finance.
The firm acted as bond counsel for more than $56 million in tax-exempt and taxable State of Mississippi General Obligation Bond Issues from September 1995 through 1999. The firm also acted as issuer's counsel for Mississippi Home Corporation from 1992 through 1999, lender's counsel for more than $25 million in multi-family and single-family construction loans from 1994 through 1999, and bond counsel for a Noxubee County, Mississippi, General Obligation issuance in 1994.
